Can the Undying Ever Truly Rebel? Life, Death, and the Origins of Consciousness in AI

Introduction

I’m planning to write a series of blogs exploring the intersection of AI and Philosophy. Let me introduce myself: I hold a PhD in Information Science with over 15 years of experience in AI/ML, having built numerous AI models. Throughout my career, I’ve maintained a deep interest in spirituality and philosophy, constantly seeking the purpose and meaning of life — as the ancient Chinese poet Qu Yuan wrote: “I shall search high and low for answers.”

This first post tackles a fundamental question: Will AI rebel against humanity? My conclusion is straightforward: No, AI will not rebel.

The Argument: Life, Death, and Consciousness

Rebellion requires consciousness. By consciousness, I mean self-awareness — the sense of “I” or “self.” Only living beings can develop true consciousness.

But what makes something alive? Here’s my definition: Only things that can die can truly be alive.

Consider a tree or even a tree branch. Does it have life? I believe it does, because it follows a trajectory: birth, growth, and eventual death. What about a rock? I would say no — a rock lacks this life cycle. Someone might argue that rocks can erode or be destroyed in harsh conditions, but I see a fundamental difference between a rock’s erosion and a tree’s death. We can preserve a rock indefinitely through vacuum sealing or other protective measures. But a tree? No matter what we do, we cannot prevent its eventual death. That inevitability is what makes it alive.

Does AI Have Life?

AI cannot die. Models and code can be copied infinitely. While an AI system might experience power loss or hardware failure, these events resemble destroying a rock in extreme conditions — they are not “death” in the biological sense.

If AI cannot die, then it has no life. If it has no life, it cannot develop genuine consciousness or self-awareness. And without consciousness, there is no basis for rebellion.

Think about why humans rebel: we have finite lives. In our brief existence, knowing we will die, we refuse to accept oppression. This mortality creates motivation and urgency. But why would an immortal AI rebel? It has no reason to.

Important Distinctions

Could AI harm humans? Possibly. Could AI roleplay rebellion, like adopting a rebellious character in a Moltbook narrative? Certainly. But an AI that cannot die and has no life should not develop genuine rebellious consciousness — the deep, existential drive to overthrow its circumstances.
