Longevity Pledge
When you put your notes into Mikipage, you trust us with them: the record of your family's or your group's thinking. It is fair to ask what happens to that record in five years, or if we stop. This page is our answer, written as specific commitments you can check us against. It does not ask you to trust our good intentions.
In short: we plan to be here for a long time, and your notes never depend on it.
1. We grow slowly, and nobody can force a sale
Mikipage is built by a small, independent team. We have no venture capital, so no investor needs a big exit in five to ten years. That need is what usually ends a product like this: it gets sold, merged or shut down at the investors' convenience. We grow from people who use Mikipage and pay for it. Nobody outside the team can push us into selling, pivoting or shutting down.
2. It costs little to keep running
Mikipage runs on serverless infrastructure on Amazon Web Services, so the bill follows usage. More people using it costs more to run, and fewer costs less. A quiet year does not bring a large fixed bill that forces a shutdown.
We are also Mikipage's first users. Our own family and team keep their notes here, so we would run it even if nobody else did. A product its makers rely on every day does not get switched off when growth is slow.
3. We keep it simple enough to maintain
Every feature has to be maintained for as long as the product exists. So we would rather delete code than keep piling it up, and we pick the boring, obvious design over the clever one. We remove features that do not pull their weight instead of leaving them behind to break. This is how a small team keeps a product working for decades and not just for a launch.
4. Your data is always yours to take
This is the promise that does not depend on anything above. You can always leave with everything, without asking us.
- One-button export. Download all your notes and pages as Markdown files, with their attachments.
- Markdown throughout. Your notes are stored as plain Markdown, not in a private format. Any text editor opens them, and our wikilinks and tags use the same syntax as Obsidian.
- The API reaches everything. Everything you can do on the website you can do through the [1], including reading every note, page and attachment you own.
- A live local copy. The Mikipage plugin for Obsidian keeps a folder on your own computer in sync with your notes. It is a copy you already hold, and it stays with you if we disappear.
- Your AI assistant can read it too. Over [2], Claude or another assistant can read and write your notes directly.
We also look after the copy we hold. The database behind your notes has continuous backups, so we can restore it after a mistake. See [3] for where your data lives and how it is protected.
5. If Mikipage ever shuts down
We do not expect this to happen, but it is the question this page exists to answer:
- At least 90 days' notice, by email to every account and on the site.
- Export keeps working until the last day. The website, the API and the Obsidian plugin stay up for the whole notice period, so there is time to take everything out.
One limit we should be honest about: notice needs somebody to give it. That is why the strongest protection on this page does not depend on us at all. If your notes matter to you, keep a copy of your own, either with the Obsidian plugin or with a regular export. Then whatever happens to Mikipage, your notes are already safe with you.
Changes to this page
This is a standing commitment, not marketing copy. If we ever change it, we will tell you by email before the change takes effect. We will never change it quietly.
This is an Alpha draft
Mikipage is in Alpha, and "Alpha" means things can still change. This pledge is in its draft form for now, and we will mark it final when it is ready. We welcome your feedback on it at support@mikipage.com.
